Mets Rumor: Relief for Roy Halladay

The sad thing is the Mets aren't going to get Roy Halladay for John Maine and Carlos Delgado. However, the rumor is that Mets actually do have something the Blue Jays may be interested in.

Currently the Blue Jays are dead last in the American League with only 15 saves on the season. Their 58% save conversion percentage is good for third worst in the AL. The rumor is that they are interested in acquiring, preferably young and talented bullpen help.

With the Mets' Billy Wagner fast approaching a return to the bull-pen and JJ Putz's return right around the corner, the Mets suddenly find themselves with a bargaining chip.

The Mets rumor on the table is to package Wagner, Putz, and a starter like John Maine or (please god) Oliver Perez for Roy Halladay. This would certainly strain our significantly upgraded bullpen, but should lock in our starting rotation for several seasons to come. If Halladay continues to dominate MLB, his complete games could lessen the pressure on the bullpen.

Lets not forget, a well rested bullpen is an effective bullpen. The Mets have folded every year because their bullpens have been over-worked. Trotting two aces out to the hill every five nights brings back memories of the power house Mets in the late 80's when Dwight Gooden was followed by Ron Darling and Sid Fernandez.

Mets need to make a move

The Mets are starting their annual collapse early this year and the finger should be pointing at Omar Minaya. His indecisiveness and lack of direction are more and more obvious as this season unfolds.

If he wants to build a steroid era-esque team of aging sluggers he has some pieces, if he wants to rebuild an image, he has some pieces, if he wants a dominate pitching staff, he has some pieces...but a lot of random pieces don’t make a winning team.

As rumors begin to swirl around the league Omar's direction can be defined before the deadline. Worthless former stars like Carlos Delgado can be packaged endlessly with worthless future prospects like Fernando Martinez and Oliver Perez to entice a savior to hop on the Mets sinking ship and possibly rescue them.

Billy Bean, a GM genius, is always in the market for young players. Matt Holliday fills many needs the Mets have. He is young, consistent, and productive. Fernando Martinez, the hype master himself, is a perfect fit for Bean and the Athletics, throw in a Mike Pelfry and that enormous hole in left field may be filled.

Roy Halladay is virtually begging to be sent to the National League, expiring contracts like Gary Sheffield and Carlos Delgado accompanied by some bullpen help, maybe Wagner, and we seem to have a good fit for another directionless team.

But if Omar sits back and hopes Reyes will come back and do anything other than hit .260, and that Delgado will return to his Steroid Era form, or that Oliver Perez will all of a sudden get it together the Mets will fail to make the Playoffs again.
