NY Mets Rumored to be in Ben's Sheets?

The NY Mets pitching staff going into the 2010 season isn't exactly striking fear in the hearts of opponents. Sure, we have the ace, Johan Santana, at the top of the rotation, but after that, we kinda suck.

The NY Mets rumors are swirling though, as Buster Olney from ESPN has indicated that the NY Mets' interest in Ben Sheets may be rising.

Ben Sheets has been dominant at times in his career, but has been quite injury prone. No surprise really that the NY Mets like Ben Sheets, as his annual trips to the IR would fit right in with the team. Sheets missed all of 2009 after getting surgery on his elbow, but he did throw 198 innings in 2008 with the Brewers with an ERA of 3.08. Unfortunately, the previous 3 seasons he was limited to a maximum of 156 innings due to injury and averaged an ERA around 3.65.

Ben Sheets may be a fragile pitcher, but he's the type of guy the Mets could plug into the rotation and have an immediate impact. He's kinda like a Pedro Martinez junior type guy... lots of strikeouts when he's out there, but you never know if he's going to be healthy enough to take the hill on any given night.

Sure, Sheets will probably spend some time on the pine nursing his vagina, but he's younger and more capable than Pedro was when the Mets signed him. In fact, Sheets will only turn 32 years old this year, so if he actually stays healthy, he could be a bargain deal for the Mets to really cash in on a #2 guy in the rotation.
